The award recognizes the ABC journalist’s “signature reporting.” During the Gabrielle Giffords shooting, a press release announcing the honor says, Thomas “helped keep ABC News from reporting that the congresswoman was dead, which some outlets did in error.” Thomas also, the release notes, “was the very first person in the news division” to tell his colleagues the reason for President Obama’s May 1, 2011 press conference announcing Osama bin Laden’s death. Thomas, a veteran of The Washington Post and CNN, has been with the network for 11 and a half years.
