In a series of tweets, Adam Jacobi says CBS let him go after he published a story Saturday night saying that former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno had died. Jacobi tweets:
I had an awesome 17 months with CBSSports.com. I’m sorry to everyone, most importantly the Paterno family, for how it ended.

In the end, CBS had to let me go for the Paterno story going out the way it did, and I understand completely. Thanks, everyone, for reading.

To the people who are using my firing to badmouth CBS: Please don’t. I’m not. Thanks.

CBS was not the only news site to falsely report Paterno’s death. But it was the first major news site to pick up the erroneous report from Onward State. CBS was criticized, in particular, for not sourcing the original death report but naming the student publication as the source of its error once the mistake was clear. Paterno died Sunday.
