The Pulitzer Prizes
Some Pulitzer hopefuls — perhaps those who enter year after year? — didn’t realize the entry deadline had been moved up to Jan. 25 from Feb. 1. A post on the Pulitzer website explains:
We have learned that some entrants, relying on past practice, innocently missed the deadline. We are providing some relief by re-opening the entry site on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. eastern time. Submissions must be made during that time frame. Thereafter, no entry for 2012 will be accepted.
Sig Gissler, administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes, told me by email that the new deadline was well-publicized. “We sent out a press release, an AP advisory and posted the change on our Pulitzer website and the entry site.” Still, he assumed some entrants might not notice, and indeed a half-dozen entrants missed the deadline — even after the Jan. 25 cutoff was extended to 5 p.m. the next day.
“On the whole, the new deadline seemed to work well,” he said. “And we think this limited amesty is reasonable in a transitional year.”
If you’re going to take them up on the offer, put down that glue stick: This year, only digital entries will be accepted. And the contest is emphasizing “real-time” reporting for its breaking news category, so that beautiful story published the day after a disaster probably won’t cut it. The winners and finalists will be announced on April 16. (Trust me; I checked.)
