The Seattle Times' Reveals the Sad Legacy of a Rose Bowl Winning Team
Seattle Times reporters Nick Perry and Ken Armstrong go behind the curtain to examine the story of the 2000 Rose Bowl-winning University of Washington Huskies. The 2000 squad, which was ranked No. 3 in the nation and had an 11-1 record, also had an untold story.

The paper discovered "an unsettling level of criminal conduct that was often excused or overlooked. Mistakes made then still haunt a program trying to rebuild."

I especially appreciate the extensive listing of "source notes" that help explain how the investigation found what it found. I should point out that five of the top 10 most-emailed stories on the site are related to this investigation. What does that tell you about reader interest?

The Series:
Introduction: "The disturbing story behind the last UW team -- and how its legacy still casts a shadow on the Huskies"

Chapter 1: "Convicted of assault and accused of rape, star player received raft of second chances"

Chapter 2: "Key UW linebacker played entire season after his bloody print was tied to shooting"

Chapter 3: "To Huskies fans a tragic hero, to the courts a wanted felon"

Chapter 4: "Linebacker discovered joy of learning but had to buck football program that emphasized eligibility, not education"

Epilogue: "Emmert: 'You can win, and you can win properly.'"
