CoverItLive: Working on Searchability
CIL
currentbuzz.org
Barbara Iverson downloaded the content of a liveblog she created with CoverItLive and republished it successfully on her own blog.
Earlier, Tidbits editor Amy Gahran wondered whether the content recorded in a CoverItLive.com (CIL, a liveblogging service) session would reside on CIL's servers -- which could present difficulties if you want that content accessible to your site's search engine, or for attracting inbound links. CIL president Keith McSpurren recent provided some answers.

According to McSpurren: "...in 'Instant Replay' mode, the content of a completed live blog is sitting on CIL servers in a database until it is called by someone clicking the 'Play' button. Because of this, it is not searchable as of yet."

Responding to a user's request, CIL came up with a "download" function that allows a user to copy all of the content of a completed liveblog to their own server. Copying the downloaded content to your own site allows the content to be included in your own site search. It also provides the added security of having your own content on your own servers. It could also result in more hits to your site, rather than CIL's servers, each time the content is viewed or linked to.

McSpurren noted that since since introducing the download feature, it is used rarely (even by the user who originally requested it). Most users are comfortable that tagging or titling any article will make the liveblogged session searchable in the same way that a video is tagged --although the full content will not be searchable. CIL is continuing to work on the challenge of searchability.

I checked out the process for downloading a CIL liveblog's content to my blog. It worked quickly and formatted neatly. It included polls and links to images in the downloaded version.
