Asiapundit is
having fun, and rightly
so. Just imagine who got blocked by the Chinese censor? Yes,
indeed, Google's censored edition of its search engine,
Google.cn. ... Needless to say, the uncensored edition of
Google.com has no problem in China.
Last month Google
debuted its censored service in an effort to do whatever it would take to enter China. Unfortunately, it not only got
criticized and
heckled by all quarters, but the effect seems to have been the reverse
of what the company hoped for. Instead of eternal gratitude from the Chinese authorities,
Google got blocked.
Since you will never get a public statement on why some sites are formally
blocked and others are not, we can only speculate on why the censored search
engine got censored. Of course, there is a real possibility that those who
decided on what to block or unblock really have a good sense of humor.
More likely is the possibility that Google's new addition to the Internet
just caused what the Chinese authorities try to prevent: an avalanche of
discussions. Suddenly the whole world, inside and outside China, could
compare the two services and that sparked a discussion that was not
wanted by China's Internet nanny.
At least, the discussion that seemed to fizzle out is back again.
