Leading a News Organization with Vision, Respect for Reporters
By Mallary Tenore

Ellen Weiss, vice president of news for National Public Radio, says being a good newsroom leader means giving frequent feedback to her colleagues and being an "honest broker." Weiss delivered Poynter's 2007 Naughton Lecture, named after Jim Naughton, president emeritus of Poynter. Weiss spoke October 21 to a group of about 50 newsroom leaders who attended Poynter's Leadership Academy.

An award-winning broadcast news executive, Weiss formerly served as executive producer of the NPR News magazine All Things Considered and headed the NPR News National Desk. During her talk, she noted the importance of noticing different people's needs in the newsroom and spoke about changes she has made at NPR since becoming vice president in April.
