A reader's e-mail about the use of "gonna" prompted Armando Acuna to check the Sacramento Bee archives. "By my count, the word 'gonna' was in the paper no fewer than 30 times from Aug. 1 to Thursday, mostly in the features section," he writes. "I would say that's common and it surprised me." AP style prefers "going to" over "gonna," but it makes exceptions for slang spellings in quotations. More editor/ombud columns:
