David Talbot says newsroom cuts are counterproductive and that even papers like the Chicago Tribune are looking more and more like mid-level suburban papers. "You can't have a shriveled product with cutbacks and cutbacks and cutbacks and still expect people to read," he says. "[There's] ess space devoted to investigative reporting. You don’t have the voices of the columnists. They’ve become banal, tepid and bland."
