During the 2003 Stamford Advocate contract negotiations, "one thing we did dig our heels in for was a 'Successors and Assigns” clause," says former Advocate union member
Patrick Verel. "That clause would let us stand united against those who might move in and plunder a Stamford treasure for pure profit -- Gannett included. So despite the best efforts of Tribune's professional union killers, The Advocate's 34-member union has lived to fight another day." Not wanting to put up with the union, Gannett recently walked away from a deal to buy the Advocate from Tribune.
