Newsday officials drilled into a safe at the paper's offices Tuesday and discovered that three gold Pulitzer Prize medals are missing. The medals -- from 1954, 1970 and 1974 -- had apparently been sold last week at an auction for $7,000, $4,500 and $4,000, respectively. "It's amazing that a newspaper which has been awarded the highest prize the Pulitzer committee can give has not properly safeguarded its Pulitzer medals," says Bob Greene, who headed the team that won the '70 and '74 prizes.
