Rex Smith tells his readers that "martyred editors" at the Los Angeles Times and others who've walked or been canned for resisting budget cuts are often lionized. "Honestly, and with all due respect to the fine and conscientious editors involved, I don't get it," writes Smith. "Journalism needs leaders who will fight for their readers in several ways: yes, by trying to get the budgets they believe are needed to deliver good work, but also by working within the reality of the marketplace to accomplish journalism that matters, even if it's not all that you might dream it could be." || More editor/ombud columns:
