"What would drive newsprint costs higher if there are fewer pages flying off the printing press?" writes Jim Jelter. "The answer lies in paper manufacturers' efforts to gauge the rate of the newspaper industry's contraction." Newsprint consumption by US dailies has tumbled nearly 30% over the past five years. The price is expected to hit $660 a ton by the fourth quarter -- a level last seen in late 2006.
