Charles Donelan learned a lot at the recent Nieman Conference on Narrative Journalism in Boston. "Of all the excellent advice given by veteran [Charlotte Observer] reporter [Tommy] Tomlinson, the thing that stayed with me most was this, 'hang out time is worth more than any answer to a direct question.'"  Marcus Mabry of the New York Times "was so interesting that he actually made me want to read a whole book -- his -- on Condoleeza Rice. His ten commandments of journalism are worth re-listing in full." Donelan does that in his piece.
