The story goes back to the late 1920s when
Clarance Brettun Blethen -- desperate for cash -- took $1.5 million from
Bernard Ridder and gave him a minority stake in Seattle Times Co. Over the years, the Ridder family made several attempts to buy out the Blethens but was unsuccessful. ||
The situation today: Frank Blethen says the Seattle Times has lost a total of $49 million this decade. (Second item.)
