Ex-KR newsman Thelen on what went wrong with the chain

Retiring Tampa Tribune publisher and former KR exec Gil Thelen says: "Knight Ridder suffered a significant talent drain after [former CEO] Jim Batten's death in 1995. I would estimate that no more than 10% of my class in the 1993 KR executive development group remains with the company. ... Personally I believe KR's decision to move away from television was in retrospect a mistake. And the company never received Wall Street recognition for its online success. The end-game then was KR being perceived as a pure print play and a company without a clear vision and plan for future success."
