John Green, suspended executive producer of the weekend version of Good Morning America, will return to work Wednesday, an ABC rep says.Green was suspended for a month without pay March 31 after two
e-mails he had sent with disparaging remarks about President Bush and
former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright were leaked to the media.
To Bob Steele, who teaches ethics at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, the punishment fit the crime.
"None of us are moral or ideological eunuchs, but given the
journalists' role, there needs to be regulations on what they say and
when they say it."
Steele says he's cautious about expressing opinions, even among
family and close friends. "There's a risk that those comments could be
spun and misinterpreted to others."
In that regard, Green may have been naive if he assumed his e-mails would stay private, Steele says.
"E-mails are cyber-soapboxes. In this day and age, what we send will likely end up in the public sector."
