Bob Steele, Nelson Poynter Scholar for Journalism Values at the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank, in December told now-ESPN.com sports blogger Mike Sando that media coverage of sports shouldn’t be dismissed as trivial.

Steele cites sports as a thread that runs through issues ranging from economic to racial to ethical — as witnessed by Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick’s pending guilty plea for felony dog fighting

"There is a great deal about sports that has to do about economics and major financial issues in communities," Steele said. "There is a great deal in sports that has to do with race and race relations. There are important stories in sports related to medical issues and health concerns and drugs and chemical dependency."
