Bob Steele, an ethicist at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., a
training center for journalists, said that he would approach the notion of
removing or altering articles from a newspaper’s archive with great caution. "There are consequences to that," he said. "An absence of a piece of information
could lead to rumor, falsehood, inaccurate actions down the road by somebody
because they can’t find the record. The public would have every reason to say: 'What else is missing? What else is altered?'"
