When collegues become the news, difficult ethical questions arise

When reporting a story on one of its own, Kelly McBride, a journalism ethics expert with the Poynter Institute says a news organization must first ask, "How do we pursue that in a way where we can also honor the commitments of the corporation to this individual?"

McBride says the next step is to take a step back.

"I think you've got to identify the people in the newsroom who are in the best position to make impartial decisions and maybe the people who are in the worst positions who are very close to the individual in question.", says McBride.
