Better than your average story
Ever wondered about the average cost of braces? Or calories burned in a day? If so, look no further. This would make an interesting tidbit of information to feature on a page. You could also run a poll or do mini interviews asking what students think the average of something is and compare it to the actual stat.

Poynter's Al Tompkins writes in Al's Morning Meeting:

The Yahoo Buzz List notes that every day, thousands of people go online to find out the "average" something or other. They look up average salaries, average costs and average temperatures. So Yahoo listed a nice collection of "averages." The collection includes the average IQ, average SAT scores and average tattoo costs.

The terms average, mean and median seem to confuse journalists. Journalist Robert Niles is here to help.

You can take a free "Math for Journalists" course online by going to our News University Web site.
