Blogging the ongoing evolution of Poynter Online.
The ink is never dry on the Web. Especially during lively news days when news site home pages change constantly. That's why we are capturing screen grabs of various sites each day. See an example of our Homepage Highlights photo gallery. When you see something online that is worth noting, share it with us by taking a screen grab (On a Mac: Shift+Apple+4; on a PC: "Print Screen") and posting it to Poynter Groups. Watch this video below to see how to post your screen grabs (and any other images) to Poynter Groups.

Post a Photo to Poynter Groups from Ellyn Angelotti on Vimeo.

How to upload a photo to Poynter Groups:

1. Log in to Poynter Online.
2. Join a journalism conversation group (Online & Multimedia, Ethics & Diversity, Visual Journalism, TV & Radio, Reporting & Writing, Journalism Education, or Leadership & Management)
3. Under "Recent Photos," click on "Upload a photo."
4. Choose your image.
5. Add a caption (a URL to the site, your thoughts about the screen grab, why it is noteworthy).
6. Add the appropriate tags.
7. Submit your photo.
8. Comment on images others have posted.

You can post your photos to any group, but just be sure to tag them. Also, use descriptive tags to add more context to the photos you've posted. We suggest tagging the image with the news organization that is the source of the screen grab (ABC, Current.com, NPR, etc.) and which (if any) news story your screen grab features (i.e. election, breaking news, etc.).

After you post you own image, look at what others have posted to the journalism conversation group pages. Using the new photo commenting feature you can post your thoughts on many of the uploaded images.

To give you an idea of what you could post, we've uploaded a couple of images:

Web Site Screen Grabs
Grab images of site that break the news of results, catchy headlines, good looking interactives or designs. Below see a screen grab from our election gallery featuring a page from the ABC news site.

Post images of your newsroom

What does your news command center look like? Below see a photo of journalists hard at work from the Democratic National Convention. Take a photo of your crew in action.

Why Do You Deserve a Raise?
Posted by Ellyn Angelotti at 1:19 PM on Oct. 24, 2008
All Poynter Online users can log in to the site and read any blog posts in Poynter Groups. To create your own blog post or contribute a comment, you must join the group you would like to post to. I'll show you how to do this in the video below.

Now that you know how to post to Poynter Groups, try it. Post your response to this question: "In these tough economic times, what are the top 10 reasons journalists deserve a raise?"in our Poynter Groups blog. We'll highlight the top entries on Poynter Online.

After you answer the question, read and join some conversations already going on in Poynter Groups.

"Which video camera should I buy?" (Online and Multimedia group)
"...there are some great cameras out there that won't break the bank or the reporter's back. It is very important to gear up according to need, skill level and frequency of use. "

"Is Community Organizing Media?" (Online and Multimedia group)
"...Journalists are traditionally content creators. But now people are overwhelmed by content. 'Community organizing' may not be journalism as we define it, but 'content organizing' certainly is."

"Political involvement -- No? No? Never?" (Ethics and Diversity group)
"Many of my respected colleagues have taken buyouts and might have time on your hands. Do you think it is appropriate to use this time to do political work, and still consider yourself a journalist?"

"If I could teach beginning journalists just ONE THING..." (Journalism Education group)
"...it wouldn't be about AP style or inverted pyramids or even correct punctuation (though heaven knows I worry that writing as we know it is going down the tubes in a tidal wave of commas). No, I want them to know about the importance of primary sources."
"Politics and the Newsroom" (Leadership and Management group)
"We need the views of gay journalists to understand how their community is dealing with hate crimes, we need latino journalists to speak up in order to understand their community's view of immigration. We need Republican journalists to speak freely about why they believe McCain will make the best choices. This is key to free-flowing, diverse discussion. We must encourage it, not discourage it."
Join one of the above discussions or make your case, "Why do journalists deserve a raise?" We'll highlight the top entries on Poynter Online.

Follow Journalism Conversations on Twitter
Posted by Ellyn Angelotti at 1:32 PM on Sep. 5, 2008
When we redesigned Poynter Online last month, we unveiled Poynter Groups -- a new way to connect with other journalists and have conversations.

Now you can follow those conversations by getting a tweet anytime someone posts a new blog on Poynter Groups by following @Poynter on Twitter. In addition to updates from Poynter groups, when you follow @Poynter you'll get a tweet anytime we post a new article to the Poynter site, too (Al's Morning Meeting, Romenesko, etc.).
