St. Petersburg, Fla. (December 1, 2023) – The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the nonprofit Poynter Institute, in partnership with Google and YouTube, announces the opening of grant applications for the next phase of funding to support fact-checking initiatives worldwide and reduce the harm of misinformation.

Organizations may apply beginning Friday, December 1, 2023 to the $12-million Global Fact Check Fund for the third round of the multi-year program, funded by a grant from Google and YouTube.

This third round of grants is called ENGAGE, and is designed to support fact-checking organizations in scaling local and regional audience and stakeholder engagement, including expanded staffing and programming and training and cross-pollination across technology channels. It also supports exploration of sustainability measures, new markets, audience research, metrics and analytics, digital media, community engagement, and innovation and experimentation to develop tools for fact-checking.

“These grants will help fact-checking organizations increase their impact and reach as they provide the public with verified, accurate information across many different platforms and formats,” said IFCN director Angie Drobnic Holan. “The ENGAGE grants can really make a difference in the vital work being done by fact-checkers worldwide.”

Applications will remain open until January 8, 2024. To apply for the ENGAGE grant as well as review criteria, visit the Global Fact Check Fund page: https://www.poynter.org/ifcn/grants-ifcn/globalfactcheckfund/

Applicants may receive up to $100,000 USD each through the grant process. For the complete application guidelines, learn more here.

Potential applicants may register for a Q&A webinar on Wednesday, December 13, at 1 PM GMT/UTC (9 AM ET) and learn more about the fund.

The ENGAGE grants follow two earlier phases of the program, BUILD and GROW, which so far have awarded nearly $2 million to help 55 organizations expand and strengthen their work.

The $12 million Global Fact Check Fund was created as part of a $13.2 million grant from Google and YouTube, announced in November 2022. The project aims to support about 135 organizations in 65 countries across 80 languages over three years.

The mission of the Fund is to strengthen and develop the operational, production and engagement capacities of local and regional media organizations to increase the quality, volume, frequency and expansion of fact-checking abilities and activities.

Additional rounds of all three grant phases, GROW, BUILD and ENGAGE, will continue through 2025.
