ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Dec 19, 2024) – The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at Poynter is announcing a new Business Continuity Fund to provide financial assistance to fact-checking organizations that are facing natural disasters, civil unrest, military conflicts or state repression.
The Business Continuity Fund is intended to quickly help fact-checkers with temporary financial after business operations have been affected by a disruptive event. The fund will ensure the safety and well-being of their team members and help the organization resume its normal activities as soon as is feasible. It comes at a critical time for fact-checkers around the world who, despite the challenges they face, continue to adhere to a code of fact-checking principles that set high standards in fact-checking journalism.
The fund is made possible by Meta and builds on the IFCN’s existing Legal Defense Fund.
“During challenging times that vary by culture and context, the IFCN stands ready to assist fact-checkers so they can carry out their important work,” said IFCN Director Angie Drobnic Holan. “We are pleased to be able to offer funds to these organizations, as well as the support and best wishes of their fact-checking peers from around the world. Meta has a proven track record of supporting the fact-checking community, and this new fund is yet another means of showing that commitment.”
Up to $20,000 is available for each eligible applicant. Selected fact-checking organizations can use the funds to support staff, replace or repair damaged equipment, restore internet connectivity, or implement new security measures.
An additional smaller fund will make available grants of up to $5,000 per signatory for mental health assistance. Fact-checkers that qualify for the business continuity fund will be eligible, as well as IFCN signatories that face instances of significant harassment.
Additionally, the IFCN will be offering training programs alongside these funds to help IFCN signatories prepare for emergencies and to implement mental health support. Details on the trainings will be announced in 2025.
The fund, totaling $300,000 for business continuity aid and $45,000 for mental health, will be administered by the IFCN and the program will run until all funds are exhausted. Applicants must be signatories to the Code of Principles. Grantees will be selected by a committee made up of the IFCN staff and the IFCN advisory board.
