Today’s topic is inspired by reader Jeff Starck, who wrote in with suggestions for cost-of-living and inflation calculators. I thought it was a good excuse to look at some resources for covering the economy. Next week, more suggestions for this topic — send your thoughts to poynter@sree.net

Here are sites worth visiting:

PowerReporting.com’s Economics section: This site, run by Pulitzer-winner Bill Dedman and the Columbia Journalism Review, has an excellent set of links for covering the economy, as part of its “beat by beat” guides

EconData.net: A one-stop shop for regional economic data.

Newsengin’s free tools: A cost-of-living calculator and a percentage decipherer.

Current Value of Old Money: Among the features Starck likes here: “What is a dollar worth, purchasing power during Revolutionary War and California Gold Rush. All the way at the bottom of the page is the World GDP from One Million B.C. until now.”
