Joe Kahn succeeds Susan Chira, who has been promoted to assistant managing editor for news. Times executive editor Jill Abramson says of Kahn, who moves up from deputy position: “On the foreign desk, we’ve all seen him apply his strategic thinking on how to pursue a running story and how he enjoys working with correspondents to refine and deepen it.” Meanwhile, several sources tell John Koblin that restaurant critic Sam Sifton is a leading candidate to become the head of the national desk. “I’ll pass on that one,” Abramson says when asked about Sifton, who has run the Times’ culture desk and worked for the dining section. || October 8, 2009: Why not Sifton as Times executive editor?
