Two hundred and thirty employees of the (Harrisburg, Pa.) Patriot-News will be notified by the first week of October whether they’ll keep their jobs, the Associated Press reports.
In late August the Pulitzer Prize-winning Patriot-News and The (Syracuse, N.Y.) Post-Standard announced they would reduce print frequency and cut staff. Both papers are owned by Advance, which has put similar plans into motion in Michigan, New Orleans and Alabama.
The Patriot-News will print on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays beginning Jan. 2, it announced Tuesday. The change will allow the news organization to “thrust a majority of its efforts toward a 24/7 digital-first operation,” Nick Malawskey wrote.
The Post-Standard will print the same days beginning Jan. 1, Editor Stephen A. Rogers said Wednesday.
Starting in October, the Times-Picayune will print Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays only.
In an interview last month about whether other Advance publications in New Jersey, Oregon and elsewhere would reduce print days and staff, Steven Newhouse told me, “We’re facing the same conditions everywhere … We’re looking at every market and trying to figure out what the right model is. We have local teams doing it because the conditions are different in different markets, but our goal everywhere is to come up with a formula where we can see a long-term future.”
