Unity: Journalists for Diversity elected San Francisco Chronicle copy desk chief David Steinberg as its president, the organization announced Friday. Steinberg and Janet Cho both put their names forward, Richard Prince reported earlier this month. Steinberg, Prince noted, was the first white man to seek the organization’s presidency.
Steinberg served two terms as the president of the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association. NLGJA joined Unity in 2011, and the organization changed its name from Unity: Journalists of Color at the beginning of this year. The The National Association of Black Journalists withdrew from Unity in 2011, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists said in June it is re-evaluating its membership in Unity.
NAHJ sat out the vote, Prince reports Friday.
The organization’s previous president, Tom Arviso Jr., resigned in April after four months in the position, saying his “leadership style has not been as effective or as productive as I would like, and that has frustrated me.”
