“These cameras are pervasive in American society now,” said Kenny Irby, visual journalism group leader at The Poynter Institute. “Everybody had a digital camera in their home. So it just stands to reason that … would carry over to the Middle East.” …


That said, participants in conflicts and other traumatic events can document incidents that journalists are unlikely to witness. Mr. Irby noted that after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, “we had firefighters and EMS workers bringing out images to the wire services and to the local media because they were able to get into places that journalists couldn’t.”
