While the Blair firing appeared to be tied to individuals, Bob Steele, a professor of ethics in journalism at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fl., said this latest affair draws into question The Times’ own processes for reporting and editing.


“To me, the most important element here is that their checks and balances, their editorial oversight, wasn’t up to snuff,” Steele said. “Though it took a long time for them to write this mea culpa, I found it to be genuine and meaningful, and a significant cautionary tale for all of us in journalism.”
