Police Chief Charlie Beck concluded that officers failed to follow department policy when they shot and injured two women delivering the Los Angeles Times in the midst of the manhunt for rogue ex-cop Chris Dorner a year ago, the paper’s sources say.
The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday that Beck found the eight officers who fired on the two women violated the rules on use of deadly force. The paper attributed the information to multiple sources familiar with the case.
The police were guarding the home of a police captain who had been involved in the decision to fire Dorner for misconduct. When they spotted a truck similar to Dorner’s, they let loose a volley of bullets.
Forty-seven-year-old Margie Carranza and her 71-year-old mother, Emma Hernandez, were hit. Hernandez suffered the most serious injuries with two shots to her back; Carranza received superficial wounds, the paper said.
The officers involved have yet to be identified and were assigned to desk duty.
