As for the future of the ez-D technology, Matt Thompson, an online reporter for the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, who watches new technology closely, is skeptical.

“I saw these movies in a convenience store. It’s about five or six dollars — a third of the price to purchase a DVD,” Thompson said.

“I don’t know what marketing figures this is based on. Are there that many people who are fed up with renting movies?”

Thompson said services like Netflix, which allows subscribers to rent movies through a Web site and keep them as long as they’d like, will stand the test of time much better than these self-destructing inventions.

“For $10 more you can buy the DVD,” Thompson said. “It doesn’t strike me that this adds a lot of convenience to anyone’s life.”
