“What’s going on makes it very hard for news editors making decisions,” says Aly Colón, ethics group leader for The Poynter Institute, a Florida school for journalists. “There are so many outlets, so much competition and everybody wants ratings.


“But competitiveness is not an intrinsic value of journalism. In this frenzy of the 24-hour news cycle, people making these broadcast decisions need to ask, ‘What value is this bringing to our audience?’ “
