The University of Texas at Austin this week announced the appointment of former Washington Post editor R.B. Brenner as director of the School of Journalism.

The university released a statement Thursday:

“Brenner brings an acute awareness of new trends facing journalism and demonstrated success at furthering the teaching and intellectual missions of journalism programs,” said Roderick P. Hart, dean of the Moody College of Communication. “In turn, he will help our students anticipate the shifting media landscape and enable them to make the communication breakthroughs of tomorrow.”

Brenner currently is the deputy director of Stanford University’s journalism program, where he has worked since 2010. In January, he was named by Stanford Daily as one of the university’s 10 best professors.

At the Post, Brenner served as Maryland editor, metro editor, Sunday editor and deputy universal news editor.

He also is a member of Poynter’s adjunct faculty and previously served as a Poynter Ethics Fellow.

Correction: An earlier version of this story erroneously identified the Moody College of Communication as the school for which R.B. Brenner will serve as director.
