The New York Times Tuesday created the position of international managing editor, appointing deputy international editor Michael Slackman to the job.
In his new role, Slackman will take a wide-angle view of operations of the Times’ international coverage, Times International Editor Joe Kahn writes in a memo to staff:
At the same time, I need a colleague who has purview over all our main objectives. Those include owning the biggest news stories, prioritizing the strongest enterprise, and creating an integrated, 24-hour global report. For that, Michael is the right choice.
The Times also announced Tuesday the addition of Atavist Executive Editor Charles Homans as digital deputy for The New York Times Magazine.
The Times has made a good number of changes to its editing ranks recently. Capital New York reported Monday that it appointed four new digital deputies to various desks including national, styles, science and business. It has also promoted people like Amy O’Leary, one of the authors of its innovation report.
The Times’ goal with these hires “is to finally end part of what it means at The New York Times to be ‘digital,'” deputy deputy executive editor Ian Fisher wrote in a memo that Capital obtained. “It is now simply what we do, all of us.”
