Adriane Ohanesian is the second recipient of the Anja Niedringhaus Courage in Photojournalism Award. The award, from The International Women’s Media Foundation, was named in honor of Associated Press photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus, who died while reporting in Afghanistan in 2014.
In 2005, IWMF gave Niedringhaus the Courage in Journalism Award. Ohanesian is a freelance photojournalist whose work has appeared in Time, National Geographic and The Wall Street Journal. Ohanesian, who is based in Kenya, has photographed conflicts in Darfur, Sudan and South Sudan. The award comes with a $20,000 prize, according to a press release. Ohanesian also won an award in this year’s World Press Photo contest.
‘At the end of the day it’s not about me; it’s about the lives of the people in the pictures,’ Ohanesian said. ‘My photographs document what I’ve seen in isolated areas of the world. I hope the people I photograph feel that these photos communicate their circumstances to the outside world. It takes a massive amount of trust on the part of my subjects to know that I’m accurately representing them and their story.’
