The New York Times in recent weeks has faced criticism for making an embargo deal with Columbia University on a report involving accusations of anti-Semitism against the Middle Eastern studies department. According to a follow-up editor’s note, The Times did not disclose the source of the document nor the condition that the writer not seek reaction from all the interested parties.
Bob Steele, who teaches ethics at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists, said that he can’t judge the appropriateness of The Oregonian’s decision on the Nike embargo. But he said that a newspaper should accept an embargo only after much discussion in the newsroom because the newspaper essentially is being asked by a source to withhold information. “An embargo that restricts both the timing of the publication and also the methods of the journalists in pursuing the story is more problematic,” he said.
