The Dallas Morning News offered a preview Saturday night of the Sunday front page following the deaths of five Dallas police officers at a protest on Thursday.
This is the first time The Dallas Morning News has run a front-page editorial since September 12, 2001, said Robyn Tomlin, the managing editor of the Morning News. Via email, Editor Mike Wilson spoke about the rare move.
“After two days of covering violence and heartbreak, we felt the need to pause for a moment and speak directly to the community,” Wilson said. “We had two simple questions: What kind of city are we? What kind of city do we want to be? In the midst of so much noise and pain, we needed a quiet place for that conversation. Sunday’s front page is that quiet place.”
The Morning News will publish 14 pages of coverage on Sunday, Tomlin said. More than 200 journalists have covered the story for the newspaper since the first shots were fired.
In June, the Orlando Sentinel also decided to run a front-page editorial after a gunman targeted a gay nightclub and killed 49 people.
