The deadly deep freeze that hit the Midwest on Wednesday led front pages, too. According to the Associated Press, governors in several states declared a state of emergency. Schools closed. Even the U.S. Postal Service halted mail delivery.
“Even before 2 a.m., Wednesday had set a record low for Jan. 30, descending to 16 degrees below zero and beating a low temperature of minus 15 set in 1966,” the Chicago Tribune reported.
From the Minneapolis (Minnesota) Star Tribune: “As of 7 a.m. around the state, the National Weather Service (NWS) reported temperatures of 27 below zero throughout the Twin Cities area with windchill readings in the low minus-50s.”
And the Grand Forks (North Dakota) Herald beat them all but didn’t quite get to record-breaking cold: “The low record for Jan. 30 is 39 below in 2004, but Meteorologist Jennifer Ritterling said it was about 33 below early Wednesday morning. The temperature is not expected to rise above 19 below Wednesday, but could feel as cold as 65 below.”
