Over on Poynter’s Online-News
industry discussion list, there’s a funny discussion going on about
awkward and sometimes hillarious Google AdSense contextual ads that
show up on news pages. Steve Yelvington, who contributes to this blog, offered up one of his favorite AdSense ads accompanying a story about journalism:

Journalism Sale

As Yelvington noted, “Maybe Google’s algorithm knows something we don’t.”

Another favorite was spotted by Ken Sands:

News story: “Woman eating chili bites into human finger”
Google Ad Sense ads:
The Nail Fungus Treatment
Nail Fungus? 7 Day Cure

I guess some things never change. Back in my long-ago print-newspaper
editing career, I remember watching to make sure that display ads for
airlines weren’t on the same page as we’d place an airplane-crash story.
