Here in Colorado, lots of us are excited that the hometown Denver Broncos are in the NFL playoffs — the first time they’ve gotten this far since the days of John Elway.
Denver’s newspapers of course are gearing up for this Sunday’s AFC
championship game against Pittsburgh, and getting ready in case the team makes it to the
Super Bowl.

DenverPost.com has put together a fun “Broncos Extra” page containing:

  • Broncos computer wallpaper, featuring scenes from last weekend’s win over New England.
  • Video instructions for making a newspapers Broncos hat.
  • A (silly) choose the best beard/best hair game for Jake Plummer and Troy Polamalu.
  • Audio of a new Broncos song.
  • Broncos puzzles and “create your own crazy Broncos fan” game.
  • A podcast with a Post football writer talking to his counterpart at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

There’s some frivolous stuff in there, to be sure. But DenverPost.com executive producer Gil Asakawa is taking the opportunity seriously to use the Broncos’ successful season to build website traffic.

“Message boards are jumpin’ and we’re about to launch a Broncos blog
for people to post comments on,” he says. And “we’ve been working
really closely with the Post-Gazette; we’re promoting them a lot and they’re promoting us a lot.” The Post site also is asking for reader fan stories and photos.

Rival RockyMountainNews.com has plenty of Broncos playoff coverage, too, though it looks to have taken a more serious approach.
