The International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) at the Poynter Institute is committed to supporting the fact-checking community by offering resources that contribute to advancing the field. For this purpose, IFCN is extending its partnership with the Facebook Journalism Project  to launch a second round of grants in the Fact-Checking Innovation Initiative.

These new grants will be built on the legacy and experience of the first round, but will narrowly focus on technology innovation and development. In February, $350,000 was awarded and divided among seven fact-checking organizations that focused on projects in technology, news literacy, business models and creative formats.

IFCN and the Facebook Journalism Project are looking for projects that bring fact-checkers together with developers and/or academics to build and test technology solutions that empower high-quality journalism and help fact-checkers do their work.

Applications will be opened on June 26  at 12 pm EDT and will be closed by August 7th, 2020. Recipients will be announced no later than Sept. 18.

Grantees will share funding totaling up to $450,000 and have opportunities to share their findings with the wider fact-checking community during Global Fact 8, in June 2021. Grantees will also get access to IFCN staff and evaluation committee members. Applicants can submit only one proposal and seek up to $100,000. The application should include a detailed budget.

The projects should also address region-specific challenges and opportunities.

“Fact-checking has been not only growing by the number of organizations but in their impact as well. This initiative will allow fact-checkers to present out-of-the-box ideas to the broader journalistic community and provide more tools and skills to fight against misinformation,” said Baybars Örsek, IFCN’s director.

“We’re excited to continue our partnership with the IFCN to extend our support to innovative projects that will benefit the broader fact-checking ecosystem around the world”  said Orlando Watson, from the Facebook Integrity Partnerships team.

The call for applications will be announced during Global Fact 7, during the “Fact-Checking Innovation Initiative winners: Roundup” session. Please leave your email below to receive a notice when the applications open.
