Writing for broadcast or online audio is different from writing for print. Poynter faculty member Al Tompkins offers advice in this Al’s Morning Meeting column.

A few tips, based on his interview with CBS Radio’s Peter King :

  • Focus on the important stuff and keep it simple.

  • Good sentences can be just 5 or 6 seconds long.

  • Look for details that make your story real and add interest.

In another story, a Q&A with broadcast consultant Valerie Geller, Tompkins offers tips on writing visually. Helping your listeners see what you’re telling them will help them feel and understand it.
