In celebration of Friday’s International Fact-Checking Day, the International Fact-Checking Network is hosting two IFCN Talks panels covering the state of fact-checking and the ways fact-checkers can better engage with their audiences.
IFCN Director Baybars Örsek will moderate the first panel, which will look at the state of fact-checking in 2021. He’ll be joined by FactCheck.org director Eugene Kiely, Africa Check deputy chief editor Kate Wilkinson, and Teyit editor-in-chief Gülin Çavuş.
The panel will discuss accusations of censorship against fact-checkers, the potential impact of mis- and disinformation on the safety of fact-checkers, and what the future holds for sustaining and scaling the field of fact-checking.
IFCN reporter Harrison Mantas will moderate the second panel, which will look at how fact-checkers communicate and connect with their audiences. He’ll be joined by Venu Arora, co-founder/executive director of the Ideosync Media Combine, Fabiola Torres, director of Salud Con Lupa, and Alexa Volland, editor of MediaWise’s Teen Fact-Checking Network.
Panelists will discuss projects their organizations have been working on that have helped them form a deeper connection with their audiences, followed by insights on the best ways fact-checkers can meaningfully engage with the people consuming their fact-checks.
The IFCN Talks series builds on the success of 2020’s Virtual Global Fact 7 conference. The virtual setting necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic allowed the IFCN to open the annual fact-checking conference to a wider global audience. Each month, members of the public get access to experts from across the global fact-checking community who discuss topics such as deplatforming, government regulation, and the role of fact-checking in our broader information ecosystem.
Both sessions will be open to the public via Zoom and a rebroadcast will be published on the IFCN’s YouTube page later in the day.
