Poynter’s Al Tompkins recently wrote in his Morning Meeting column that he has seen many stories about how school lunch prices are going up because of food costs. Tompkins included this list of stories from New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Nebraska and elsewhere.
Another way school districts are trying to save money is to go on a four-day-a-week schedule to reduce transportation and other costs. Tompkins wrote that schools in one Minnesota school district voted to close on Mondays and increase the length of the remaining days by one hour each. The board said the change would save $100,000 in one year.
Tompkins wondered what will happen to kids who depend on free lunches at school and what problems this will cause for parents having to take care of their children on Mondays.
