A large number of Danish and Norwegian media sites, including top 10 sites such as TV2.dk and EkstraBladet.dk, have joined an informal campaign to get users to upgrade their browsers to anything but Internet Explorer 6.

Tech Web site Version2.dk estimates that 25 percent of development time is spent tackling specific IE6 problems. In Denmark 15 to 17 percent of users still use the old browser, which was released in 2001.

Jon Lund, the CEO of the Danish Association of New Media (FDIM), joins in chorus: “Our member sites wish to spend as little time on technical problems and as much time on content as possible.”

University-student Soren Hugger Moller has even produced a small campaign Web site, which explains the technical reasons why users should upgrade. He also provides a code that can be embedded in a Web page for those who want to join the campaign.

Some statistics already indicate a 2 percent drop in the number of IE6 users, but the big problem may be big corporations that are waiting for the final release of IE8.
