ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Aug. 31, 2021) — Fact-checkers, journalists, technologists, policy makers, leaders, educators and consumers who care about the integrity of our interconnected information ecosystem can now register to attend the International Fact-Checking Network’s eighth Global Fact summit.
“Global Fact is where principle meets practice,” said Baybars Orsek, director of the IFCN and international programming at the Poynter Institute. “It’s where we all speak the same vernacular of fact-checking, in addition to our native languages. It’s where we form alliances, outside of our country of origin, where we coalesce to tackle shared problems, despite our time zone. For eight years now, Global Fact is where fact-checkers around the world align to address mis- and disinformation on a global scale.”

Major projects and initiatives have originated at Global Fact, including International Fact-Checking Day, IFCN’s Code of Principles, and partnerships with big tech. The in-person conference has taken place in London, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Rome and Cape Town, where more than 300 participants from 55 countries convened in 2019.
In 2020, Global Fact was one of the first major journalism conferences to move online after the pandemic began. More than 1,000 people attended virtually across 16 time zones.
Highlights from this year’s virtual program, taking place Oct. 20-23, are:
- Claire Wardle, co-founder and U.S. director of First Draft, will deliver the keynote speech to reflect on the state of our information ecosystem from a pandemic perspective.
- Andrew Pattison, digital business solutions manager of the World Health Organization, will join a panel with fact-checkers from Brazil, Spain and India to discuss the impact of collaboration between health authorities and fact-checkers to address misinformation around COVID-19 and the safety of vaccines.
- Rasmus Nielsen, director of Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, will moderate a discussion to explore the incoming policy debates and regulations that will significantly affect European fact-checkers’ fight against disinformation through public policy.
- The IFCN will moderate a panel with Facebook to discuss the Third-Party Fact-Checking Program on its five-year anniversary.
- The systematic attacks and online harassment against fact-checkers will be addressed both during dedicated panels and breakout sessions.
- Similar to previous years, this year’s Global Fact will offer space to discuss how regional networks can be strengthened to tackle regional issues and local responses can be provided to local problems that fact-checkers are facing.
Participants will also hear from IFCN leaders, Poynter president Neil Brown, Duke Reporters Lab director Bill Adair, and director Baybars Orsek, during opening remarks about the state of fact-checking. Other topics include media literacy, regulation in Europe, academic research, sustainability and scalability.
