The Poynter Institute has announced the appointment of Howard I. Finberg to the school’s faculty of 18 teachers at its campus in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Finberg, a specialist in examining the impact of new technology on journalism, has served as a Presidential Scholar in Residence at Poynter for the past year. In that time, he has explored the potential for distance learning applications and how they might be used to supplement the school’s offerings of seminars and workshops.
In his new position, Finberg will help guide Poynter into the world of interactive learning programs and work with other faculty members to prepare material for online courses.
Previously, Finberg co-founded Finberg-Gentry, The Digital Futurist Consultancy to provide senior-level executives with a better understanding of the technological changes affecting today’s businesses. He was a founding board member of the New Media Federation of the Newspaper Association of America and served as the group’s president. In 2000, the NAA honored him as its “New Media Pioneer.”
Finberg was a corporate vice president at Central Newspapers where he managed the company’s Internet and technology strategies. He was also a director at Phoenix Newspapers, Inc., which publishes The Arizona Republic. At the Republic he held several executive newsroom positions. Other affiliations include the San Francisco Chronicle and the Chicago Tribune, where he held senior newsroom management jobs. He also worked at The New York Times, the San Jose Mercury News and the San Francisco Examiner.
He has also worked with such industry groups as the American Press Institute’s Media Center, Inland Press Association, the Society for News Design, National Press Photographers Association, the Online News Association, Ifra and the World Association of Newspapers.
A former teacher at Northwestern University and San Francisco State University, Finberg is the co-author of “Visual Editing – A Graphic Guide for Journalists,” a college level textbook about newspaper design, information graphics, illustrations and photography.
The Poynter Institute is a school for journalists, future journalists, and teachers of journalism. Poynter conducts more than 50 seminars annually in the areas of leadership and management, reporting and writing, broadcast, ethics and diversity, and visual journalism. The school owns the Times Publishing Company, the parent company of the St. Petersburg Times, Congressional Quarterly and other publications.
