Most leadership training is designed for supervisors who have direct reports. But in today’s newsrooms, leaders are just as often responsible for projects, products or people across departments. Demonstrating leadership without formal authority is its own skill, and it’s core to this new online leadership workshop from Poynter.

Lead With Influence is a new, interactive, virtual training for newsroom leaders who manage big responsibilities — such as processes, products or platforms — but no direct reports.

Pulling from the best practices, feedback and application needs of Poynter’s flagship Leadership Academy for Women in Media, this four-session workshop is especially designed to help women and nonbinary journalists in the industry use their social capital to lead with influence.

The next Lead With Influence program takes place Oct. 3-24, 2022. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 2, 2022.

You can find more details here, with answers to common questions below.

How is this related to Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Media?

Poynter is committed to training women and nonbinary leaders in journalism, tech and media. Lead With Influence was developed based on the best practices, feedback and application needs of Poynter’s flagship Leadership Academy for Women in Media. The leadership academy is a weeklong program intended to teach leadership skills to those who are in their first few years of managing people as well as managers who have never had formal leadership training. Lead With Influence takes place over four weeks with a live online seminar each Monday. It’s intended to teach leadership skills to those who manage products, processes or platforms.

How much is Lead With Influence?

Tuition for this online workshop, which includes 16 hours of live instruction, is $600.

Do you offer scholarships for tuition?

Limited scholarships are available to qualified applicants, thanks to the Gannett Foundation.

I’ve applied before to the Leadership Academy. Why should I apply for Lead With Influence?

The women’s leadership academy is designed for people managers. This program is designed for leaders who manage processes, products or platforms. It’s possible this program is a better fit for your needs: building strategic and productive relationships throughout your organization, de-escalating conflict, marketing yourself and your work, fostering creativity and collaboration across silos and managing up.

We developed Lead With Influence in response to the need we saw in the applications for the women’s leadership academy; we anticipate a competitive application process for this program as well.

If I apply for this program, should I also apply for the Leadership Academy for Women in Media?

Probably not in the same year. Apply to the program that is catered to where you are in your current job, or the one you know you’ll have in the near future. If you are not currently managing people, Lead With Influence may be a better program for you. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t apply for Poynter’s Leadership Academy for Women in Media in the future if, and when, you begin managing direct reports.

Do I need a letter of recommendation?

You do not need a letter of recommendation to apply for Lead With Influence. The deadline to apply is Friday, Sept. 2, 2022.
