At least one newsroom in every state and two U.S. territories will get a piece of $20 million in Press Forward funding, according to an announcement Wednesday. They include legacy newspapers, weeklies, TV and radio stations, an alt-weekly, newer nonprofits, student-led newsrooms, those covering communities often underserved by journalism and newsrooms devoted to strengthening emerging journalists. The majority of newsrooms will get $100,000 towards general operating support.

Press Forward, as a reminder, is an initiative that aims to get $500 million into local news. It announced in April that its first open call for funding would focus on historic inequities

“Motivated by the extraordinary quality and number of proposals, Press Forward is funding twice as many news organizations as it anticipated initially through its first open call,” the press release reported. “The recipients, the majority receiving $100,000 in general operating support, were selected from a total of 931 proposals from newsrooms with annual budgets of less than $1 million.”

Press Forward reports that of the 205 grantees:

“These newsrooms are proof that we are seeing a moment of transformation, where new and longstanding leaders are stepping up to create a new story for local news,” said Dale R. Anglin, Press Forward’s director, in the press release. “Each of these newsrooms plays a vital public service role in its community – providing trustworthy local news and information in places where no other sources may exist. Independent newsrooms need community support to survive. We hope that more people will subscribe and donate to them.”
